As a little girl I’d watch my mom create our Halloween costumes from scratch. We would let her know what we wanted to be for Halloween and for a couple of months she would spend countless hours creating it for us. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, the fact that we could go to Joann’s, choose a fabric, and with a lot of planning…..voila!
She was also always sketching Disney princesses dresses and find different ways to recreate them without loosing its original concept. Looking back, I wish she could have saved the sketches and turn them into a clothing line.
All I wanted as a little girl was to be a fashionista like my momma.
A lot of people claim to love fashion but they don’t take the time to really read books or follow fashion designers, that my friends, is called “love for shopping”. I like to call myself a fashion nerd because I’ll read anything and everything related to the topic, ranging from fashion shows to research and statistics.
In high school, I joined the sewing and photography as my electives. I’d create something in my fashion sewing class and use it to shoot still photos. My sisters would pose as models in my super bad creations. HEY, we all have to start somewhere.
But being the first in my family, I didn’t know that a career in fashion was possible. It was by pure accident that I landed in the journalism major.
I eat, breath, and sleep fashion. There is not a doubt in my mind that establishing a career in fashion journalism would be a dream come true.
