As the weather changes over from hot and humid to cold and dry, your skin may feel like it needs a refresh. Being from California, during the summer, the way I eat is totally different as I’m eating more veggies and drinking A LOT of water, which increases circulation and helps skin stay visibly healthy. When winter comes along, I tend to grab coffee and bagels more often so that means that my I have to find other ways to keep my skin hydrated.
Our skin is always exposed to the environment, which means it is much more vulnerable to changes in that environment than other organs in the body. Because of this, our skin tends to produce fewer oils in the fall and winter months.
Dove antiperspirant has always been my go-to and I was excited to try out Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant. I don’t think there has ever been a time where I don’t have Dove products in my home. I love that there are so many choices when it comes to fragrance preference. They smell so good, keep me odor-free and they don’t leave any white marks. They offer 48-hour odor and wetness protection and have added skincare benefits that give you softer, smoother underarms. When my skin feels dry, I feel uncomfortable and not as confident, which is why I wanted to provide you with 3 easy skincare routine changes for the winter season, with help from Dove dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba.
Lay off the intense exfoliation. I used to think that getting rid of dead skin every day was essential for clear and glowy skin. Until I learned the hard way. Dr. Barba says that over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its essential oils, leading to breakouts in the dryer, colder months. A misconception is that rubbing off dead skin cells daily will improve skin when it actually can dehydrate it.
Get into a bedtime routine. For me applying moisturizer to my skin is the easiest and most convenient in the evening. During the day we are so busy trying to get our to-do list done that sometimes caring for our skin is the least of our worries. Skin care for me becomes a top priority at night. If you’re looking to decrease collagen breakdown, you might want to consider these three quick steps recommended by Dr. Barba: 1. Wash your face. 2. Apply retinol. 3. Moisturize.
One tip that scared me into taking better care of my skin was when I learned that dryness can lead to serious skin problems. Invest in a hydrating cleanser. If you allow your skin to get overly dry it can lead to worsening of eczema, psoriasis and can be a major cause of winter itch. Use a hydrating cleanser and make sure to moisturize the skin after cleansing or gently exfoliating. If this doesn’t scare you like it scared me, I don’t know what else will!!!
And, bonus tip, be sure to take care of your underarms, too. The textures of all those layers of clothing we put on to stay warm can irritate the skin, so Dr. Barba recommends a moisturizing product like Dove AdvancedCare Antiperspirant. Be sure to check out all the great fragrance options and more about Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant online here.
It can be tough to keep our skin glowing during the winter season, especially if you already have dry skin. The sooner we take the initiative to take care of our skin the more our skin will thank us. Staying moisturized, hydrated and following easy lifestyle changes can keep your skin looking beautiful and dewy.
Do you change your skincare routine for the winter?
